Grow Smarter is an EU project where authorities and corporations join forces to build connected and smart cities of the future. Stockholm is one of three so called lighthouse cities in Europe where the new technology and solutions will be developed.

Need Insights signed a contract with the City of Stockholm (Stockholms Stad) to perform measurements of people movements in the Globen/Tele2 and Slaughter House (Slakthus) area.

The measurements are done using smart IoT sensors from Need Insights, picking up radio signals from people’s mobile phones. The data is then analyzed, in cooperation with IBM and The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH in Swedish), to get insights about challenges and how to optimize pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the area.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Grow Smarter EU project, it also has a perfect fit with our company vision – develop smart IoT sensors and analysis models for cities and retail environments”, says CEO of Need Insights, Jason McMillion.

“The project is progressing as planned and more than half of the IoT sensors are now installed in the area. During this fall (2018) we hope to be able to present, in partnership with IBM and KTH, a solution using an advanced analysis model with visualizations to get insights about people movements within the Globen/Tele2 area. The solution will then be presented to other European cities as well as globally”, says Mika Hakosalo, Stockholm Stad, Implementation manager, Grow Smarter (site Stockholm).

Need Insights will continue the development of its smart IoT devices and anaysis software to be able to deliver the solution at scale together with different partners within Grow Smarter.
